Sven and Dave’s suicide pact
Well done captain Beckham and thank you!!!!?? Even when Dave cheated on his wife it was all Rebecca’s fault and now this. What’s going on? Sven’s choice of Beckham as captain created England’s eternal problem that kept them good but not great. Beckham had many great qualities and skills but too often could not justify his automatic selection on performance alone. In the 2002 world cup and more so in this one he was the weakest player on the pitch who picked himself first - one sublime long ball every game and, in a team that struggled to score in open play, a reputation as the best dead ball player around does not a great captain make. Forever unable to lead on the pitch, once tactical rigor mortis set in all Dave could think of to do was run around more and more – too often he couldn’t even do that. Beckham cannot be allowed to duck the blame on this one – if he was thinking of going anyway the best thing he could have done was stand down as captain before this world cup and allow the best players to be selected instead of being, as he became, the obstacle to success.
