Be afraid
Ignoring the English for a moment, if I was a member of a minority community in Scotland I would be uncomfortable, even afraid. Could someone ever ‘do a Gordon’ and be proud to be English or British and be First Minister of Scotland? Can you imagine being a British Muslim community in Scotland that wanted to publicly support the English team? – and God help them if they had another home team that ever played Scotland – stand by to be spat at. Scotland’s challenge is to create a positive and inclusive identity and not one of genetic purity based on a Celtic master race. It is an endless and often painful journey but one that England has been travelling for a long while: but come to London in your Scottish or any other shirt and share in our success. A start is for role models (politicians, sportsmen, actors even) to speak out against the thugs: in the meantime ‘foreigners’ beware – it’s the English today and you’re next.
